City Manager Be Fire Aware The recent fires in Los Altos Hills have reminded us to be fire aware and ready to evacuate if needed.
- Register for AlertSCC at www.alertscc.org to receive emergency notifications targeted to your neighborhood
- Be aware of the weather forecast.
- National Weather Service may issue a Fire Weather Watch, indicating that weather conditions in the next 12-72 hours may result in extreme fire behavior and trigger a Red Flag Warning. This is a good time to check your “Go Bag” and review your evacuation routes.
- A RED FLAG WARNING is a notice issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) that weather conditions in the next 24 hours may result in extreme fire behavior. Carefully watch conditions in your area and be alert for fire. If your household has mobility issues, large animals, or other special needs, you should review your evacuation plans and make sure you’re ready to go quickly—or decide to proactively move now.
- When do I evacuate? Give your household the best chance of surviving a wildfire by being ready to go and evacuating early.
- If you feel unsafe—evacuate. Moving your household to a safer area will relieve anxiety. And if your home remains safe, your household will have an evacuation drill.
- If your household has special needs that will require extra time, or has a difficult evacuation route—go early.
- When there is an evacuation order, you must go. Lives are far more important than property.
For more information on evacuating, read about Ready, Set, Go! at https://bit.ly/rsgGo
Get Ready, Set, Go!—Wildfire Preparedness Have you prepared your household for wildfires? Take the first steps: - AlertSCC: Register your home address and contact information with the Santa Clara County emergency notification system at www.alertscc.org This signs you up for alerts targeted to your neighborhood.
- Evacuation Routes: Check your zone on community.zonehaven.com and study the map. Where is your normal route out of your neighborhood? Where is a 2nd route? How would you walk out if you had to?
- Go Bag: Make a “go bag” for everyone in your household—including pets—to grab if you need to evacuate. See example here: https://bit.ly/prepandgo

Resources responded from the communities of Los Altos Hills, Los Altos, Cupertino, and Saratoga. REMINDERS: 1. stay away from the scene, 2. if present, leave the scene, or 3. if neighbors, remain inside their home 4. keep roadways clear for emergency vehicles. 5. Residents are reminded to avoid the scene to allow first responders to work without concern for bystanders’ safety and to preserve the environment and evidence for the fire investigation that occurs after the incident.

Pedestrian Safety Tips
Walking is typically considered a safe form of exercise at any age, but there are still some safety risks involved. The following are some basic tips to remember before you head out the door for a nice healthy walk: - Use sidewalks and paths where available
- Walk against traffic if you must walk alongside a road, to see what is coming and react if necessary
- Wear bright clothing, even during daylight hours
- Avoid walking at night, but if you must, wear reflective clothing and use a flashlight
- Do not walk distracted; avoid talking or texting on your cell phone while walking
- Always follow traffic signals and use crosswalks when you must cross a roadway
- Walk with family, friends, or a caregiver if you suffer from cognitive decline or other physical impairments
