PUBLIC SAFETY AND EMERGENCY SERVICES
Law enforcement and public safety services
are provided to Town residents under contract to the Santa
Clara County Sheriff’s Department. Residents of Los Altos
Hills participate in direct election of the Sheriff and also have
a voice in operation of the Sheriff’s Office through their
County Supervisor; however, specific services provided to the Town
are negotiated and approved by the City Council. Important phone
numbers for residents to remember are 911-to report
all emergencies and 408-299-2311 to report an incident
to law enforcement of a non-emergency nature.
Fire Protection, suppression and safety services
are provided by the Los
Altos Hills County Fire District. The District contracts with
the Santa Clara County Fire Department
for services. For more information regarding fire prevention programs
provided by the District that include free brush chipping and removal,
brush and yard waste drop-off days, site visits for property fire
fuel evaluations residents can contact the District at 650-949-1044.
In addition to the basic police, fire and disaster services Los
Altos Hills receives from outside agencies, Town staff, the Emergency
Communications Committee and Emergency Preparedness Committee work
together with the City Council to address emergency response planning
and training. The goal of the Town is to ensure that the committees
are organized and ready for any emergency.
Animal control services are provided
through a contract with the City of Palo Alto. The services include
regular field coverage by an Animal Control Officer, investigation
of all animal bite incidents, licensing of animals providing residents
with information about lost pets and disposal of dead animals. Residents
can obtain more information about Palo

dispatch services.
The Town of Los Altos Hills has a leash law . Pursuant to Municipal
Code Title 6, Chapter 1, Section 6-1.409 “No person owning
or harboring any dog shall allow or permit such dog, whether licensed
or not, to be upon a public street, sidewalk, park, school ground,
public place or upon any unenclosed lot or land except when held
under leash by an able-bodied person.” Residents may be issued
a citation if their dogs are not on a leash.
UTILITIES
Solid Waste services are provided under
an agreement with the Los
Altos Garbage Company located in Cupertino. The agreement covers
garbage collection; bi-weekly pickup of recyclable materials and
yard waste; provision of debris boxes for large clean-up projects,
two free town-wide clean-up days at collection points throughout
the Town and two free curbside pickups during the year to coincide
with residents normal collection dates. For scheduling, residents
should call the Los Altos Garbage Company at 650-961-8040 with at
least 48 hours notice.
Town residents can dispose of their Household
Hazardous Waste through a program run by the Santa
Clara County Department of Environmental Health. Through an agreement
with the County, residents are permitted to schedule drop-off of
household hazardous waste products at one of the County’s
facilities. For additional information and scheduling, residents
should contact the agency at 408-299-7300.
Water is supplied to approximately two-thirds
of the Town residents by the Purissima Hills Water District which
is governed by a publicly elected board; the remaining one-third
of residents are served by the California
Water Service Company, a private water service.
Flood control services are provided through
the Santa Clara Valley Water
District. Five of the members of the District Board are elected
and two are appointed by the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors.
Gas and Electricity are provided to Town
residents by Pacific Gas and Electric
Company. To report outages and obtain emergency information,
residents are encouraged to call 800-PGE-5000 (800-743-5000).
Telephone services are offered by SBC
Pacific Bell. Residents can report telephone service problems
by dialing 611 or 800-332-1321.
Sanitary Sewer Maintenance. The Town
of Los Altos Hills is served by two sewer basins. The Northern half
of the Town drains to the Palo Alto Basin and the southern half
drains to the Los Altos Basin. Sewer overflows or backups in the
Los Altos Basin should be reported to the City of Los Altos Public
Works Department by calling 650-947-2785 (week days) and 650-947-2770
(nights and weekends). Overflows or backups in the Palo Alto Basin
should be reported by calling Town Hall at 650-941-777 (week days)
and County Communications (nights and weekends) at 408-299-3233.
Cable television services are provided
to the Town by Comcast. For
subscription and customer service information, residents can call
800-945-2288.
COMMUNITY SERVICES
El Camino
Hospital is a non-profit community hospital. The
hospital is located on Grant Road in Mountain View, and serves Los
Altos Hills residents as well as those living in surrounding communities.
El Camino Hospital is governed by a five member Board of Directors
who are publicly-elected or appointed representatives. As a group,
these representatives oversee the assets of the El Camino Hospital
District including El Camino Hospital, El Camino Hospital Foundation
and MidPeninsula Homecare and Hospice.
School Districts. Residents of Los Altos
Hills are served by more than one school district. Students from
the Southern part of Town attend schools in the Los
Altos Elementary School and Mountain View-Los Altos Unified
High School Districts, and those in the northern section attend
Palo Alto Unified School
District schools. These Districts are governed by publicly elected
boards. Residents from Los Altos Hills may also enroll in the Bullis
Charter School‘s K-6 program. Numerous private schools
are also available in the immediate area.
Foothill-DeAnza Community College District operates Foothill
College whose campus is located in Los Altos Hills.
Library. The Town is part of the Santa
Clara County Library system and is most closely served by two
libraries located in Los Altos. The Los
Altos main library is one of the most heavily used in California.
A seven-member Library Commission consists of two members from Los
Altos Hills and five from the City of Los Altos.
